Stepping out a bit

As the calendar still says Autumn and the weather outside says Winter, I decided to step back into a topic I often find myself debating in my head. What am I going to do with all this stuff? Of course I have made the decision to limit my gaming to two main periods, WWII and Pike and Shot. For WWII I have 28 and 15mm. Far more terrain for 15mm. It is important to know that for WWII I have settled in on one ruleset Too Fat Lardies Chain of Command 2. I love the system, everything about it. Pike and Shot is Epic scale. As I mentioned last time using Beneath the Lily Banners. So, this means I have a lot of stuff.           And I have a lot more. Far too much to ever use. So I have to, I have decided to clean up my excess. Soon.

Rules. Rules and more rules.

Gamers have rules. Usually lot's of rules. The collection of rules is sometimes as large the collection of miniatures. I do have many, many rule sets. Some are older than my children, Some were played many times, some were used only once, and some, were never played at all. You just know when you look at a set of rules that they are not what you are looking for. After gaming for over 50 years, you just know  when a set of rules aren't what makes you want to play. I understand these are games, but I feel the need to "feel" as if it is a simulation of actual events.      Back to the English Civil Wars, and my EPIC armies. There are a few rule sets out there for this period, and a few more for the general period of Pike and Shot. I have several EPIC sets including the Napoleon set. I found a rule set from TFL/Reisswitz press, General d' Armee, by Dave Brown. I liked the idea of orders in the set. Each commander has so many orders he can issue, but t...

Hard to find the mojo

I have purchased yet another set of rules, not for the WoTK (War of Three Kingdoms) this one is for WWII. The second edition of Chain of Command from Too Fat Lardies. For those that may not know Chain of Command, or CoC as shortened by TFL, is a platoon based skirmish game that in my opinion is the best there is. But aside from that, I am still looking at the Epic boxes and trying to get back into painting and basing.     Before we go too far though, My approach to EPIC is a bit different and unorthodox as I have been told repeatedly. I am not looking at bases of ten figures across, two ranks deep. No, that would be far too easy. I cut the figure stands and bases in half. This makes them five figures across and when combined one in front of the other makes four ranks deep, a bit more historically accurate, as if I am in anyway or shape a stickler for accuracy. Smaller frontage also makes Marching Order look better on the table top as far as I am concerned....

A Proper Introduction

The time has come, the walrus said, and here I am.      The Old Gamer. I have been playing games for, honestly almost 60 years. From the old plastic soldiers bought at the Woolworth, to the modern metal, (or plastic) soldiers that we have now. From Dungeons and Dragons, to Avalon Hill to Traveler, to Games Workshop, to Warlord Games, and many independent games as well. I even owned a game shop for a while. Which was a time that I both thoroughly enjoyed and hated, often in the same day. But I never lost my passion for gaming. I love all of it. The research, the building, the painting and especially the actual game.     Right now, my passion lies over in the UK. The War of Three Kingdoms, or Commonly known as The English Civil War, and even further in depth to the Scottish part played in them. I have the Warlord Games Epic Pike and Shot starter set, and some terrain. The Royalists are 90% complete and I will soon start on the Parliamentarians...
